Creating a Medical Timeline: A Vital Tool for Patients

When the system fails, we investigate the medical timeline.

After my hysterectomy in October 2024, my life changed for the worse, not just because of the surgery, but because of everything that came after.

I’ve endured months of pain, dismissal, and a medical system that has made being seen and heard feel nearly impossible. And the truth is… I’m still in just as much pain. Still just as broken. Still waiting to be whole again.

What helped me fight through it all?
A medical timeline.

Not a journal. Not a chart.
A living document that tracks everything: appointments, symptoms, medications, denials, calls, costs all in one place.
A document that I can share, update, or hand off to new doctors (And honestly? If I die due to this, I’m pretty sure my attorney will label it Exhibit A.)

And here’s the wild part:
I built it with the help of ChatGPT.

Why Create a Medical Timeline?

Because our healthcare system doesn’t talk to itself.

Doctors get 15 to 20 minutes if that to review your entire history, interpret data, and decide on a treatment plan. That’s wild when you’re a broken puzzle with half the pieces missing.

At the very least, I can bring the box with the picture on it.

When you’re chronically ill or recovering from complicated surgery, you end up being the one connecting the dots between 10+ providers, 30+ appointments, test results, and insurance chaos. It’s exhausting.

A medical timeline can:

  • Help your doctors see the full picture
  • Provide documentation for appeals and second opinions
  • Keep you from repeating the same story (or having the same test run twice)
  • Empower you with clarity when everything feels like chaos

How I Used ChatGPT to Build Mine

Here’s exactly what I did and how you can do it too:

Step 1: Gather the Data

Start with what you already have:

  • Emails to/from providers
  • Appointment notes
  • Test results
  • Medication lists
  • Insurance messages
  • Even just your memory of how you felt that day

Tip: Organize it by date, even if it’s messy. I started with something like:

October 11, 2024 – Surgery at Emory Decatur.
Woke up in 10/10 pain. Night nurse noticed rapid heart rate. Pain meds delayed. Prescribed Tramadol (known allergy) and Gabapentin (which I can’t tolerate).

Then I pasted it into ChatGPT and said:

“Can you help me organize these medical notes into a clear, professional timeline?”

And it did. It gave me a formatted, clean version I could update as everything unfolded.

(Here’s a real screenshot of Page 1 from that timeline.)

Step 2: Ask for Help With Clarity

When I had a mess of scribbled notes, I’d say things like:

“Can you summarize this and highlight the most urgent red flags?”

or

“Please help me create a version of this I can share with a new provider.”

You can even ask:

“Can you write this in a tone that’s factual, but still shows how traumatic it was?”

That helped me express pain without being dismissed.

(Here’s a real screenshot of an pretty serious lack of care from that timeline.)

Step 3: Use It to Advocate (Hard)

I sent versions of my timeline to:

  • Member services
  • Appeals departments
  • New doctors
  • Case managers
  • Hospital administrators
  • Patient advocates
  • Concierge doctors
  • Second opinion specialists

When my words failed, the timeline spoke for me.

I used it to help craft responses to denials of care, guide my doctors through peer-to-peer reviews, and, at one point, to explain to Kaiser why a single social media post about my experience had gone viral.

My time, my journey , and their failure revealed the undeniable facts:
36 visits, 87+ pages of appeals, 8 ER visits, 6 CT scans, $1,562 in Uber rides, 30 pounds of weight loss, and weeks of untreated infections all within the first 11 weeks post-surgery.

Even if they didn’t believe my pain, they couldn’t ignore the data.

Here’s how I used the timeline to build one of my appeals after a denial of care that captures gaps in care in the first 3 weeks:

Want to Create Your Own?

Here’s a prompt you can copy into ChatGPT:

“Help me build a medical timeline. I’ll give you dates and events from my appointments, symptoms, test results, and messages. Please format it clearly, label key concerns, and flag anything that might need medical follow-up.”

You can also follow up with:

“Can you add a summary of what this timeline reveals about my condition and care gaps?”

What My Timeline Helped Me Do

  • Track missed follow-ups and denied care
  • Prove medical necessity in appeals
  • Prepare for second opinions
  • Tell my story without breaking down emotionally
  • Help the good doctors (yes, there were some incredible ones) take action faster

Final Thoughts

I didn’t create this timeline because I had time or energy.
I created it because I had to. Because I needed someone, anyone, to see what was happening and help.

If you’re going through something similar, please know this:

You are not “too much.”
You are not “dramatic.”
You are fighting to stay alive in a system that doesn’t always listen.

A timeline can be your voice when you’re tired, your witness when you’re dismissed, and your record when you’re forgotten.

And you don’t have to build it alone.
I’m here.
ChatGPT is here.
You have tools now.

Let’s use them.
